Lisa K. Winkler is the author of On the Trail of the Ancestors: A Black Cowboy’s Ride Across America and editor of Tangerine Tango: Women Writers Share Slices of Life. She worked as a reporter at the Danbury News-Times, Connecticut, before becoming a teacher, and writes for professional journals, Education Update, JerseyMan, and study guides for Penguin Books.
Two essays have been published in book anthologies, one for Wisdom of Our Mothers, (Familia Books) and the other in College Search and Parent Rescue: Essays for Parents by Parents of College-Going Students (St. Martin’s Press).
She taught middle school Language Arts teacher for more than 15 years and served as a literacy consultant in Newark, New Jersey. She has three children and six grandchildren, and loves cycling, knitting, yoga, cooking, travel, theater and museums. Very interesting blog on names. Names are so personal and define who we are in so many ways…It is a daunting task for a parent to be assigned that responsibility. Very much enjoyed reading your blog. I should start one; my writings are still via notes on facebook, and I only have one or two as I recall. I chuckle at your frizzy hair dilemma; my daughter Kate looked like Shirley Temple in the days of old; tight ringlets dangling all over her head. Gorgeous. Of course, she hated it and still does. I love it when she doesn’t spent hours straightening it. When she just washes it and puts in a little conditioner, she has no frizz… just hair that you can’t run your fingers through, but you just want to knead like bread; so many soft, beautiful curls that she determinedly irons out almost daily. She is drop dead gorgeous (if I do say so myself). Go to her fb pg. katiechapman (katechapman? I forget). I look at her in awe. It must have been the mailman. Bill and I bear no resemblence. She fights lupus and we suspect she is bipolar, so life is hard for her. I am fear for her life daily. And, unlike your family, we are well acquained w/death… both parents/grandparents, sister… and the possibility thereo for any of us. Life is very unpredictable.I am a 10 yr. bc survivor, have stage 2 MS, diabetes, ankylosing spondylitis and a screwed up immune system that does not allow me heat or bug bites of any sort. Our son has Aspergers Syndrome but is the funniest guy I know and an nearly 30, holds a respectable job,,, through he may live w/us forever. Getting back to the hair thing…. mine never came back after chemo, so I have no bad hair days… and my choice of wigs are endless. I LOVE working parttime with hospice patients and their families and spend the rest of my time reading, seeing friends, and loving and family my basset hound. I try to be crafty, but am lousy at it. I feel very blessed and wouldn’t change a thing (other than Kate’s health which is very scary), and I have learned so much from watching patients and their familes straddle that fine line of life and death. It has inspiried me, and taken most of my fears away. Still, I am sorry for your recent loss. Thinking of you and the family…. Barb
