What’s Tangerine Tango?

After publishing my first book, On the Trail of the Ancestors: A Black Cowboy’s Ride Across America,  I was asked what my next book was about. I didn’t have one! Though I was looking for ideas. When I hit my one-year anniversary for my blog, I thought it would be fun to put my favorite posts into a book. But that didn’t seem enough. So I invited several writers, mostly other bloggers I’ve befriended through blogging, to join the project. Along the way, a couple other writers contributed too.

Why Tangerine Tango?

I love the alliteration and love the color orange. When Pantone, the Carlstadt, New Jersey- based design company declared ‘Tangerine Tango’ its 2012 color of the year, I wrote  about all my orange-toned sweaters and accessories.

I wrote: “Sounds more like a cocktail than a clothing color.” I had purchased some colorful key chains created by the Israeli designer, Orna Lalo, and also some of her whimsical jewelry and candlesticks while traveling in Israel, and love how she designs with bright colors and funky shapes. I’ve never been the basic beige sort, and love the use of color, whether on walls, in towels, or clothes. Lalo writes on her website, “Color for me is a language that has a sound, a smell, a touch and taste.”

Without giving the writers any themes, I received submissions that span the entire citrus spectrum, from sour to sweet.  Inside you’ll find poems and essays about parents, families, jobs, food, and memories.  You’ll meet a great group of women.

There’s Donna Barry of http://huffygirl.wordpress.com/ who writes about her mother, her father, football, the ocean, and one of her first jobs.

There’s Stacey Caron of www.staceysnacksonline.com who is a food blogger and antique dealer. She shares her grandmother’s chopped liver recipe, a tart from Spain, and her love of food.

You’ll swoon in green with Judy Ackley Brown and smile as you read Barbara Chapman’s 5^th grade memories, her fight with breast cancer, and her work with hospice.

You’ll lick your lips with Gabi Coatsworth’s  http://gabicoatsworth.wordpress.com/  description of ice cream, empathize with her trip to the dump, envision her shrimping with her father and her grand-daughters, and tear reading her poem dedicated to her sister.

Dawn Landau’s  http://talesfromthemotherland.me/ ode to her daughter teems with raw emotion and her vision of seeing her late mother is almost scary.

Chris Rosen’s www.mountainmornings.wordpress.com mother will amaze you; you’ll share her pride in her rock musician son, and want to climb in the hot air balloon with her.

Like Leah Singer, www.leahsthoughts.com, you’ll be annoyed at the salesman, disturbed by her parents chiding her about her weight, and proud that she has made her interfaith marriage last.

Those with siblings will hear themselves in Madeline Taylor’s telephone essay.  With Patti Winker,  www.RemarkableWrinklies.com, you’ll wonder about life with 11 siblings, learn about running a candy store, and reminisce about life with clotheslines and before helmets.

Proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to fight Huntington’s disease.
